Hailed by the New York Times as " sensational in concert" and as a "striking virtuoso" by the Los Angeles Times, cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper has performed as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. Ms. Cooper's recent concerto appearances include the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the Osaka Symphony, the Toronto Symphony, the San Salvador Symphony and a tour of Asia with the Tokyo Yomiuri Symphony. Other recent noted solo appearances include venues such as Los Angeles's Disney Hall for Tan Dun's Water Passion, an NHK televised solo recital, a solo appearance with the Shanghai Symphony for the World EXPO, the ISCM World Music Day Festivals in Korea and Luxembourg and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
As an enthusiast of contemporary music, Kristina has premiered many works, including the US premiere of Tigran Mansurian's Cello Concerto, the European premiere of Mario Davidovsky's Cello Concerto, the world premier of Roberto Sierra's Sonata for Cello and Piano , and the world premiere of Phillip Glass's The Sound of a Voice. Aside from individual projects, Ms. Cooper has also performed, toured and recorded with the contemporary music group, Continuum.
As first-prize winner of the 1998 Walter M. Naumburg Chamber Music Award, Kristina is also a much sought after chamber musician. She has taken part in such groups and festivals as Musicians from Marlboro, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Charles Wadsworth and Friends, Concertante, The Aspen Music Festival, La Jolla Summerfest, Spoleto Festival USA, Angel Fire Music Festival, the Costa Rica International Music Festival and Chamber Music Northwest. She was the founding cellist of the prize-winning Whitman String Quartet, and was a member of the internationally acclaimed Quartetto Gelato.
Ms. Cooper has a discography of CD recordings for Arabesque, CP2, TNC, Helicon Records, Spin Art Records, eleven CD\rquote s for Pony Canyon Records and five DVDs for Fuji Television. She also has a solo recital DVD released by Amadeus Press. Kristina has been heard often on National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and WNYC in New York City. She has been featured on CNN, CBC Television, CBS's 60 Minutes and Fuji Television and NHK Television in Japan.
Kristina studied with Joel Krosnick at the Juilliard School where she earned her BM, MM and DMA. Miss Cooper is a Visiting Professor at The Jerusalem Academy at Hebrew University in Israel. She plays on a 1786 William Forster cello.
